cDSP Tube

  • As I'm learning more about the benefits (and human-pleasing qualities) of harmonic distortion, I'm looking to add some amount of it to my podcast, which I mix live-to-tape using SoundDesk. Sure, I could use a third-party plugin like Izotope's Ozone Exciter, but I like to keep my latency to a minimum when I can, and cDSP plugins are always a great way to meet that goal.

With that, I went looking for documentation on the cDSP Tube plugin and found none.

Could you explain what cDSP Tube's two controls do and, perhaps simultaneously, explain how that is similar/different to the "Tube" toggle switch on the output of the Main channel?

Also, and perhaps a feature request or just a "how would I best accomplish this?": I've noticed that the cDSP Tube plugin will gradually increase the gain of the channel. A third "gain addition/reduction" slider and/or a "gain match" switch OR simply your best practice advice for something to put in-line after it to reduce the gain on the channel would be quite welcomed.

    Thanks!
  • Thank you for the suggestion. I can confirm that an output slider and help page will be added in the next update.

Regarding the Tube saturators, they share some fundamental principles but are designed for different purposes. The insert option is specifically designed to be a distortion effect. On the other hand, the master section option serves as a summing tool, which helps “glue” all signals together. Additionally, it provides an advantage in the event of a small signal clip. Instead of experiencing the unpleasant digital clipping, the signal will be gently clipped with a Tube-like distortion.
